SC_Queens_Meet_the_GovernorDear NAMily,

I can’t believe that my reign as SC Junior Teen is already coming to an end; it seems like only yesterday that I heard my name announced as the winner! My year representing NAM has flown by in a whirlwind of traveling (across the country-literally!), volunteering, and making appearances and memories. Being a NAM queen has been a privilege and an honor that I will always cherish, and I am thankful to have had this amazing opportunity. I’m so excited to welcome all the new contestants and look forward (with a smile and tears) to crowning my successor!

A lot of girls have asked what advice I have for pageant weekend, so here goes: Make lists for everything, and check them off as you go. Come prepared; have all your paperwork ready to turn in. Do as many optionals as you possibly can (It’s so worth it!). Don’t be nervous. Smile at the judges and the audience. Speak clearly and use complete sentences during your interviews. Most importantly, HAVE FUN and BE YOURSELF! Be confident in the knowledge that you are unique and beautiful, made in the image of your Creator. And if you’re the girl who is fortunate enough to walk away with the crown— Count your blessings and enjoy every moment of your reign because, take it from me, it will be over sooner than you think. Good luck to everyone, and God Bless!

Pageant Hugs,

Laney Edwards, 2013 SC Jr. Teen

SC Princess2When the holidays were approaching Jia Patel 2013 South Carolina Princess Queen took to heart the mission of the American Red Cross’ Holiday Mail for Heroes Campaign . This past holiday season Jia helped to host a holiday party to make cards to show gratitude towards our troops, veterans and military families. This was Jia’s second year helping to host this wonderful family event. During the holidays many of us make plans to spend times with our families and loved ones however many of our service members are unable to do this because they are overseas. The Holiday Mail for Heroes Party was a heart-warming event that got everyone into the holiday spirit! Jia enjoyed donating colored paper, stickers, markers and pens and had had even more fun making cards with her friends! A night of making cards of thanks and support to those who have made sacrifices and who have served our country was a great kick-off to the holiday season!

SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. — While deployed, Senior Master Sgt. Lenora Tiek, 20th Communications Squadron programs flight chief, was able to witness her daughter, Alexandra, compete in the 2013 South Carolina National American Miss Pageant in the pre-teen division, held in Columbia, S.C., June 14 and 15.

At the pageant, Alexandra earned the prestigious title Miss South Carolina Pre-teen and qualified to compete at the national level which is scheduled to take place in Anaheim, Calif., in November.

Alexandra also received top honors for most photogenic and promising model in her division.

Unfortunately, her mother couldn’t physically attend the event due to her deployment at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan. She is currently assigned with the 455th Expeditionary Communications Squadron as the unit’s chief enlisted manager. However, with technology being what it is, Lenora was able to watch the entire competition through Face Time.

“I was just as excited and nervous as if I was sitting right there,” Tiek said. “Thank goodness for Apple and the morale network. It was not the same as being there, but I was thankful to have the opportunity to watch. I was up at 3:15 a.m. and it was worth every waking moment!”

Morale network is free wireless internet that is provided to deployed service members to increase and maintain morale.

During the entire competition, Alexandra was unaware that her mother was watching her perform.

“I was totally surprised and ecstatic,” Alexandra said. “I didn’t know that was possible. I was so happy to see her. It meant a lot to me. I miss her terribly.”

Chief Master Sgt. Jason Tiek, 20th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Tiger Aircraft Maintenance Unit superintendent and Alexandra’s father, didn’t tell her because he didn’t want to make her nervous or get her hopes up in case it didn’t work, Jason said.

At the end of the competition when she received her crown, Alexandra also received the phone with her mother who was on Face Time.

“When my dad handed me the phone while I was standing with all the other girls that won my mother told me she was very proud of me and couldn’t wait to see me,” Alexandra said.

“This is an amazing moment in her life,” Lenora said. “I am proud of her and her accomplishments. This was something that she worked very hard towards.”

Tiek left for Afghanistan at the end of April which was when Alexandra began preparing for the competition. For about two months, Alexandra prepared with the assistance of her family and spent approximately an hour every night practicing.

“We rehearsed a lot,” Alexandra said.

Some of her practice included walking as if she was on stage, reciting the two commercials she was going to perform for the actress event, and reciting her introduction.

Despite being about 7,500 miles away, Tiek still supported her daughter. Every Sunday she would Face Time with Alexandra and they would practice her entire performance for at least half an hour.

“Having her practice with me (through Face Time) definitely helped a lot,” Alexandra said.

Though Tiek supported her daughter by helping her practice, she also tried not to be a distraction. Instead, she relied on her husband to take over her usual roles, like regularly running through the interview questions and introduction, practicing proper posture and how to communicate effectively, and doing Alexandra’s hair.

“I tried to not bother my husband and daughter while the pageant was going on,” Tiek said. “I made lists and prepped them both before I left and before they headed to the pageant. I had to trust that they were ready and they were. I just needed to stay out of the way and let them do their thing. The pageant runs a tight schedule and sometimes there are quick changes, so I definitely didn’t want my e-mails or face time interruptions get in the way. It was hard but I knew it was best.”

The experience of having her mother deployed during the competition taught Alexandra important lessons and helped her grow.

“It helped her become more self-dependent and self-reliant,” Jason said.

In addition to becoming more independent, participating in pageants helped Alexandra grow in other ways.

“Pageants are very fun,” Alexandra said. “They turn me into a leader, increase my confidence and (give me the chance) to make new friends.”

The National American Miss Pageants are dedicated to celebrating America’s greatness and encouraging its future leaders which is why the winners are not chosen based on beauty.

“The pageant doesn’t judge you on your beauty,” said Alexandra. “It judges you on your poise, your confidence, and how you stand and represent yourself.”

The program is based on inner beauty, as well as poise and presentation. Emphasis is placed on the importance of gaining self-confidence, learning new skills, learning positive attitudes about competition, as well as setting and achieving goals.

“This pageant is not like what you see on Toddler’s and Tiara’s,” Tiek said. “She is not allowed to wear make-up. It is all based on how she presents herself, speaks in front of a crowd and (performs during) interviews with multiple judges. National American Miss is preparing our daughter for college and her future.”

Tiek is scheduled to return home before her daughter competes at a national level in California. However, when Alexandra competes for the 2013 National American Miss, she might once again have one of her parents deployed, as Jason is scheduled to deploy during that same time frame.

She  helped set out safety cones along the main road which were used to assist the runners with staying on course during the race. She also got to be a “traffic guard”, she held up a stop sign to make sure oncoming traffic didn’t turn onto the road where the participants were running. When runners fell behind and got off course Felicia helped guide them back onto the race route. The best part of all was she got to cheer the runners on and help encourage the runners that had fell behind in the race. After the last participant crossed the finish line she attended the awards ceremony. Runners thanked her for encouraging them, it was a rewarding feeling because she didn’t do it to be recognized. At the conclusion of the event Felicia helped pass out bottles of water, fruit and informational goody bags.

Miss_South Carolina_Pre Teen_Felicia McGill_at_various_placesI can remember being crowned as the 2012  Miss South Carolina  Pre-Teen as if it was only yesterday. What an amazing journey it has been. I got to start off my reign by donating all the books and bears that the contestants donated to the Sister Care Foundation. It felt wonderful to know that all of the donated items would put a smile on a child’s face. Then, to prepare for nationals, my mom and I got to volunteer as traffic guards in a 5K run. My whole life wearing one of those orange vests was my dream, and I actually got to live it while helping others. Before I knew it, we were on our way to Anaheim for Nationals! My family and I had the time of our lives! We got to go to Disney World, walk the Hollywood walk of fame, and I made life lasting friendships with girls from all over the country! When I got back, I had the privilege of riding in my town parade and representing NAM. Before I knew it open calls were around the corner, and I got to meet lots of beautiful girls who were beginning the NAM journey like I had two years ago. Through this experience, I have not only been blessed with such a supportive family, but awesome sister queens. Most importantly, I could not thank God enough for this life changing experience! I am blessed to say: I am your 2012 Miss South Carolina Pre-Teen, Felicia McGill.

Dear Contestants,

Welcome to a fun-filled weekend of meeting and making new friends.  There is excitement in each and every moment.  You will learn poise and self-confidence and discover just how special you really are.  I wish I could crown each of you because you are all winners.

For the fortunate one that takes home the crown, you are in for an exciting year.  You will attend other pageants as visiting royalty and the trip to Nationals is unbelievable.  You will enjoy a day at Disneyland and tour the streets of Hollywood with all of the wonderful shops.  You may even run into a celebrity at the Walk of Fame.

It has been an honor to represent the great state of South Carolina this past year.  I want to thank our State Director, Matt Leverton, and his staff for the inspiring job they do.  Most of all, I want to thank God for this opportunity I was given.  I cannot put into words how special this has been to me and my family.

It is hard to believe my year, as Miss South Carolina Junior Teen, is coming to an end.  It seems like only yesterday I was crowned and began my journey filled with memories and life-long friendships. As I crown my successor, I wish you all the success and excitement you could possibly imagine.  Cherish these memories for they will last a lifetime.

Good luck and God Bless,

Reagan Foster

Reagan Reagan2 Reagan3South Carolina Jr. Teen Reagan Foster shares her passion for dance teaching a class every week at the  Boys and Girls Club of America.  As the American family continues to transform, so does our schooling, and our expectancy of it. The turn of the 21st century has brought about major change within our families and lifestyles. More than ever, we now see extreme poverty, latchkey kids, excessive divorce rates, and new family patterns. All of these hardships our teens are coping with are being placed right in the laps of our schools and their facilities. These drastic changes in the American family are tremendously affecting today’s youth and the education they are receiving. The Boys and Girls Club of America provide stability in the lives of teens across America. Every school day from three to six teens can get tutoring; play sports, learn a new skill and participate in many more activities. Reagan became involved with the Boys and Girls club of America and fell in love with the kids, and she  realized that there was something real she could do as a sixteen year old that would make a difference in the lives of her peers.    Reagan currently teaches a weekly dance class at her local Boys and Girls Club of America, which gives her the opportunity to share  her love for dance with many enthusiastic teens that have real hopes and aspirations.   Reagan is playing  a vital roll in helping young people overcome these obstacles by calling on her local leaders to help support and become involved with The Boys and Girls Club. She is also visiting local schools and speaking to her peers about the importance of helping those who can’t help themselves. Reagan is teaching teens it’s not about talking, but about “doing” that will make a real difference in her generation.
