Logan Hornback, Kentucky Pre-Teen, volunteered her time at City Life Shawnee doing manual labor, spread gravel for a sidewalk, cut vines, pulled weeds and collected trash. Shawnee is a devastated neighborhood with many boarded up homes. The City Life Center is a symbol of hope, but required lots of work before opening. City Life Shawnee is an urban outreach program where kids of all ages can come to get help with their homework, meet with mentors that encourage them to contribute more constructively to society or even eat a hot meal. The goal is to better the community, and to make it a more pleasant place for children to grow up in. It took dedication from many people, but now they have an amazing center. Since volunteering here and getting to know the Shawnee kids Logan noticed how much they need someone to show them what the right thing is to do and how to do it. She feels so fortunate that she got to take part in leading them towards the right path. One Saturday sne spent the day cleaning up the center and getting it ready to be used. They had to spread gravel for a level sidewalk, cut vines, pull weeds along the fence and pick up trash; it was tough work! Logan learned that community service isn’t just about what you do, but also the attitude that you do it with. She was amazed by the progress at the center and how far the kids involved have come. She noticed how big of an impact her actions have, and sometimes even find them copying what she does. That’s what being a mentor at City Life is all about. For Logan being a part of something so life changing is exciting, and it’s even more rewarding to think that she has an important role in teaching the kids of Shawnee to change their community for Christ.
