National American Miss Kentucky Jr. Teen Wins Prudential Spirit Award!

Samantha Hundley, our 2008 National American Miss Kentucky Jr. Teen, emailed me today to let me know that she was the Prudential Spirit Award winner for her school!  With this award, she is now a state finalist for the state of Kentucky and will continue on for the national award.

As her school representative, Samantha will be a guest speaker for an organization called Young Ladies Like Us who works with sixth graders stressing about the importance of abstinence and making wise choices in life.

Congratulations Samantha, we are all so proud of you!

  1. hey Matt
i have done the Kentucky pageant Since 2006 i love it and its opened soo many doors for me
i am proud to say that samantha beat me in the run for the state title
but i would like to ask you a question!
(i am the girl in kentucky with the walker that competes, im in jr teen and my name is megan)
do you think the reason i havent won yet is because of my handicapped? because ive made top 15 two times and had really good scores, and no improvement comments on my score sheet from the judges. do they think i cant do the duties as a queen?
i am not complaining i understand i cant win them all, but a national american miss title is my dream
and i often wonder if my handicapped is the reason i wasnt chosen, or did they put me in top 15 because they felt sorry for me??
please reply Matt i would love to know.
i love all of you at National american miss because you have changed my life
    thanks for reading.

  2. Hey Megan!
Of course I remember who you are I can confidently and proudly say that neither case is true. It’s not that the judges feel sorry for you, and it’s certainly not that they feel that you can’t perform the duties!

Part of my responsibilities as the state director is to prep the judge’s before each competition. We have an official judge’s manual that we use for this purpose. Every director used the same manual and gives the judge’s the same instructions. For each competition we present the judges with what they are looking for. For Personal Intro: someone who communicates clearly and effectively. For Formal Wear: One who presents herself confidently, whose personality shines through. For Interview: A representative that answers the judge’s questions with confidence and grace. Of course the manual goes is to far greater detail, but that’s a brief synopsis. The judge’s also sign what is called a judge’s acknowledgment. This document states among other things that they will not judge a contestant based on their physical attributes, race, background, ect. At the pageant this year track me down and I will be more than happy to show you one of the manuals.

Once the judging is complete, the scores are tabulated, double checked and verified. The scores are the scores, just the way they are. The top 15 who are announced at the final show are the top 15 who the judges choose based on each judge’s individual score in each area of competition.
You should be proud that you have made top 15…twice. It truly is an accomplishment and one that you earned all on your own!

    Thanks,
    ~Matt
