National American Miss – National Finalist- Michaelah Wheat serving at Second Harvest Food Bank

December 12th, 2010

Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee is an organization that serves 1000’s of people each year by providing food to families in times of need. Second Harvest receives large quantities of food from various sources like grocery stores and food drives in the area. Michaelah helped to get the food ready for the families visiting the food bank. Her particular responsibilities included organizing the different food items, labeling the boxes, and cleaning the warehouse. It is hard work but very rewarding.

The first area where she served was in the food sorting area. This is a big area where food is sorted by categories. After the food is sorted, she placed them in boxes, labeled the boxes, and loaded them onto crates. After the boxes are filled, she helped to arrange them on the shelves so that the workers serving the families can clearly identify the different food items.

The warehouse is huge and some of the food that is donated is damaged or unusable. So, she also spent time cleaning up the area from food products that were either damaged or unusable. Although it is a lot of work, it is a wonderful place to serve and the Nashville community really does great in supporting the efforts of Second Harvest. Michaelah looks forward to serving there again throughout this year.

Making A Difference With Old Shoes

March 1st, 2009

olivia-shoesThis past weekend I got a couple of emails from families who have been in our pageant about a new charity that has been started by a contestant from the National American Miss Pageants.  Olivia Wright, age 10, has numerous pageant accolades and titles including state photogenic, casual wear modeling and actress winner along with being a national ambassador.  But even cooler than that is that Olivia has started a charity call H.U.G.S. (Help Us Give Shoes).  Here is an excerpt from her website (http://www.tennesseehugs.org/)

Hi! My name is Olivia Wright… welcome to my website all about my community service project, Help Us Give Shoes — or, just H.U.G.S.! I am so happy you stopped by ! It is my hope that as you check out my page, you will be inspired  to go out and see where YOU can help make a difference in our world!

I am a ten-year-old girl who one day is going to be a doctor and missionary, helping people all over the world. Until then, I spend my free time volunteering for organizations I love. Some people would like me to believe that I am too young to make a difference, but I know that kids my age can make a difference.    I have also learned that giving is it’s own reward.

As you can see Olivia is an amazing kid!

Olivia-I am so proud of you.  You are inspirational to me and everyone around you!

Matt

Thanksgiving at National American Miss

November 28th, 2008

Happy Thanksgiving from sunny southern California.  Nationals is in full swing and things couldn’t be going smoother.  Tonight are the first of the pageant finales and by 2:30pm we will have our first new national queen for the year.

During the Red Carpet Awards Ceremony, Steve Mayes, my national director, asked me to say a few words to the audience.  And the words couldn’t be more applicable than now.  Please remember that nationals and even the pageant is about so much more than crowns, banners and trophies, it’s about letting these kids know how special we all think they are.  It’s about taking every opportunity to applaud these kids..to celebrate them.

I read a great quote the other day on the internet that really brought it home for me.  “Kids are the living messages that we send to a time that we will not see.”  How true that is, they really are our legacy!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Matt
