2012 National American Miss Jr. Teen Queen Alexandra Wallace looks back on her year of service!

Wow. What a crazy but fun year I had as the 2012 National American Miss Tennessee Jr. Teen. I am so excited to share with you all some of my favorite memories throughout this year. When my name was called I was in shock. I remained completely composed however until I saw Anna and remembered what a great group of sister’s I’d have to reign with. It was that moment when I started to cry and couldn’t compose myself for pictures after. There truly are no words to describe my national’s experience. I made some amazing friends and caught up with old ones. From crazy rehearsals, our day in Disney, and competitions we always had a great time. I even met my personal favorite Disney character Winnie the Pooh! I was able to help at Anna Grace’s queens for a cure charity pageant in October. She did a fantastic job and it was awesome to see and catch up with the other queens she had present, including Miss Tennessee Teen USA Emily Suttle. I participated in the Jingle Bell Run walk for arthritis by passing out water cups to the runners and met the governor with my fellow sister queens! However, the greatest blessing throughout this year has been furthering my platform, the American Heart Association. I spoke at various elementary schools throughout my area on the importance of keeping active and healthy through the Jump Rope for Heart program. I spoke at the state capitol and met with my local representative and senators as a high level advocate. My favorite event however was the Red Out in my high school. This was something new this year and as a school we raised 3750 for the AHA! It was so cool to see my classmate working for a cause so near to my heart. As mentioned earlier, I was truly blessed with a great group of sister queens. Ava, Taylor, Anna Grace, and Sarah what a privilege it was to reign with each of you. You all brought smiles to my face and I am so thankful for each of you. I know you will all go far wherever life takes you. I’d like to say thank you to my family; Mom, Richard, Taylor, Granny and Tate for always being my biggest support system. You all mean the world to me and I love you all. Most importantly I’d like to thank God for this amazing opportunity. This year would not have been possible without his many blessings. To the girls competing be yourself and have the time of your life! You are all beautiful and winners and I can’t wait to meet all of you. Best of luck!!

North Carolina Jr. Teen Queen Naomi Whitehead has words of encouragement for this years contestants!

Hi girls! I hope you all are as excited as I am this year for the state pageant. I know some
of you are probably a little nervous because I definitely was. Then like me, you have to realize
that you’re going out there for YOU to show everyone how talented you are and how passionate
you are about winning. Being the Jr. Teen Queen has meant the world to me. It showed me that
if I’m really determined to do something I can achieve any and everything I set my mind to, and
you can too! After NAM my confidence level skyrocketed and I’ve been so much more outgoing
and ambitious ever since. I’ve worked at the Ronald McDonald House, for Red Cross, The Boys
and Girls Club, participated in walks for cancer, Haiti’s children and have even had the
opportunity to guest appear at a birthday party! Remember,it’s okay to get out of your comfort
zone sometimes. You never know, you just might like it. It’s not all about winning and taking
home a prize, it’s about the experience you had here and the new people you met.Who knows
you could find your best friend here. Girls don’t fret it’ll be a breeze if you just focus, be yourself,
and don’t forget HAVE FUN!

OhioKatylin Sweeney, Ohio Junior Pre-Teen, won first runner-up honors in the University of Akron Polymer Academy’s Young Inventor Contest. This is a national contest with more than 600 gifted students from 24 states in grades 5-8 participating. The objective is to use your creativity and scientific know how to invent something that incorporates rubber bands and can make a significant and positive impact. Katylin’s entry was a life size sculpture of a girl in a dance stretch. She named her sculpture Stretcharella. Here is her essay to accompany her invention.

Katylin Sweeney – Grade 5 – Stretcherella

Rubber bands are the perfect metaphor for becoming your best self; they stretch to reach their full potential but always remember their original shape. Said more simply, I believe you should stretch to reach your dreams but remember who you are! Spreading this message is Stretcherella’s mission. I created her so together we could make this statement to the world in a very memorable way. Stretcherella is covered in rubber bands. They are perfect because they are a significant symbol in the overall meaning. Stretcherella is meant to be an inspiration, an unforgettable image that pulls at your heart and urges you to stretch for whatever you dream of but still be yourself.

From a science standpoint Stretcherella’s anatomy matches that of the human body, a balloon skeleton, a newpaper musuclar system and rubber band skin.

National American Miss JR. Pre-Teen Miss Ohio and nationally recognized inventor – that is one well rounded young lady!! For more information on the contest you can visit www.rubberbandcontest.org.

At Kids Together Park, she helped haul the materials for and resurface a playground for special needs and handicapped children. This included shoveling the mulch-like material, transporting it in wheel barrows, then dumping and spreading the material to resurface the assigned areas. Also for our Town-wide Fall Litter Sweep, she helped organize and lead a litter sweep at her school campus of Athens Drive High School. This included advertising the event, organizing 14 volunteers, picking up the supplies, managing the safety and productivity of the sweep, picking up litter, and then reporting the results. She collected a total of 360 pounds of litter for proper disposal. In everything she has done she has been diligent and dedicated in her service and she is a pleasure to work with.

Special Olympics Tennessee partners with The American Girl Doll Company each year for a fundraising event. This event includes 4 fashion shows where young girls ages 6-10 model outfits that match the time period of the doll they are representing. This is a fun event for the community where they serve “tea party” style snacks. Proceeds from sponsors, an auction, ticket sales, and donations go to support Special Olympics in Tennessee.
As one of the emcee’s of this year’s event, Madison had the privilege of introducing the various dolls and the models. American Girl dolls are rich in history and tell a unique story. This introduction included describing the time frame in which this doll lived, describing her clothing and what life was like where she lived. As emcee, she engaged the audience in learning about the history of the dolls and actively engaging them in the show.
When she wasn’t on stage, Madison loved being able to walk around and simply provide encouragement for the young girls who served as models with the dolls. She was also able to serve as a greeter and talked with young guests about NAM, American Girl Dolls, and Special Olympics.
There was much work to do to prepare for the event. Madison learned a lot about the history of our great country. Madison said “it was a fabulous experience.” She can’t wait until the summer when she can help on the field or on the court with her favorite Special Olympics athletes.

Kristen participated in the 9/11 National Day of Service. She baked and delivered homemade chocolate chip cookies to some local fire departments in Charlotte. She volunteered through the Bank of America Community Volunteers which provided the contact information.   She called several fire departments to arrange delivery of their cookie trays. She picked stations in four different parts of town in order to cover a wide area. The project gave her an opportunity to share one of her favorite things to do and bring a smile to someone else. She was able to meet firefighters at each station and thank them for all their hard work and dedication to keeping the community safe. She was able to sit in one of the trucks which was she thought was really cool. Kristen said it was good to see their smiles when delivering the cookies to them. Kristen said it was great to show our local heroes how much they are appreciated.
